Researchers find that monetary reward enhances memory consolidation – but only for boring material
Monetary reward’s ability to improve memory has received considerable attention due to research indicating that the hippocampal memory system and the brain’s mesolimbic reward system are functionally connected. Murayama and Kuhbandner have found that monetary reward promoted delayed but not immediate memory performance, presumably by promoting memory consolidation via the mesolimbic dopamine reward system. Memory was not enhanced for tasks which were interesting on their own.
